Symbol Coverage
A numeric designation system used on commercial auto policies to indicate which categories of vehicles are covered under specific policy sections.
Symbol coverage uses numbers 1 through 9 (plus 19) on commercial auto policies to define precisely which vehicles are covered for each type of protection. Symbol 1 means any auto, Symbol 2 covers owned autos only, Symbol 7 covers specifically scheduled vehicles, Symbol 8 covers hired autos, and Symbol 9 covers non-owned autos. Different symbols can apply to liability, physical damage, and other coverage sections independently.
In COI compliance, understanding symbol coverage is essential for accurate certificate verification. The ACORD 25 certificate displays applicable symbols in the commercial auto section, and compliance teams must match these against contractual requirements.
Compliance platforms should decode symbol designations automatically during certificate review. A contract requiring "hired and non-owned auto" coverage is satisfied by Symbol 1 (any auto) or by the combination of Symbols 8 and 9. Building this logic into automated compliance rules prevents false deficiency flags and streamlines the verification process significantly.
