Hired Auto

A vehicle leased, rented, or borrowed by the insured for business purposes that is covered under the commercial auto policy's hired auto coverage designation.

Hired auto coverage extends commercial auto liability protection to vehicles the insured rents, leases, or borrows for business operations. This includes rental cars used for business travel, leased trucks for temporary hauling needs, and equipment rented with operators from other companies.

In COI compliance, hired auto coverage is a common contractual requirement, particularly for vendors who may rent vehicles to perform work at managed properties or construction sites. The ACORD 25 certificate identifies hired auto coverage through specific coverage symbols, with Symbol 8 designating hired autos.

Compliance teams should verify hired auto coverage when contracts require it, especially for service vendors like landscapers, cleaning companies, and maintenance contractors who may supplement their fleets with rented vehicles. When certificates show "any auto" (Symbol 1) coverage, hired autos are automatically included. However, if the certificate shows only specific symbols, compliance teams must confirm that Symbol 8 is among those listed.
