Non-Owned Auto
A vehicle not owned, leased, or rented by the insured but used for business purposes, typically an employee's personal vehicle used for work-related tasks.
Non-owned auto coverage protects the insured organization when employees or other individuals use their personal vehicles for business purposes. Common scenarios include employees driving personal cars to client sites, running business errands, or delivering materials. Without this coverage, the organization could face liability for accidents occurring during business use of personal vehicles.
In COI compliance, non-owned auto coverage is frequently required alongside hired auto coverage, often as a combined "hired and non-owned auto" requirement. Symbol 9 on commercial auto policies designates non-owned auto coverage.
Compliance teams should require non-owned auto coverage from vendors whose employees may use personal vehicles in connection with contracted work. This is especially relevant for vendors providing on-site services where employees drive personal cars to the work location. When certificates show "any auto" (Symbol 1), non-owned coverage is included, but targeted symbol coverage requires specific verification of Symbol 9.
