Broker of Record
The insurance broker or agent officially authorized to manage an insured's policies with a specific carrier, serving as the primary contact for certificate requests and policy changes.
The broker of record (BOR) is the insurance professional or agency designated by the insured as their authorized representative with an insurance carrier. This broker has the authority to request certificates, make policy changes, bind coverage, and receive commission on the insured's policies. A broker of record letter (BOR letter) is the formal document that transfers this authority from one broker to another. In COI compliance, the broker of record is often the primary contact for obtaining certificates, endorsements, and policy documentation. When a vendor is non-compliant, reaching out to their broker of record can be more effective than contacting the vendor directly, as the broker has direct access to the carrier and can issue certificates or request endorsements quickly. Compliance platforms benefit from maintaining broker contact information alongside vendor records, enabling direct communication channels that accelerate deficiency resolution and reduce the burden on vendor contacts.
