Admitted Carrier
An insurance company licensed and authorized by a state's insurance department to write policies and transact insurance business within that state.
Admitted carriers have met all regulatory requirements established by a state's insurance department, including capital reserves, filing rates, and policy form approvals. This authorization provides policyholders with important consumer protections, most notably access to the state guaranty fund if the carrier becomes insolvent.
For COI compliance, admitted carrier status is often a contractual requirement. Many lease agreements and construction contracts specify that all required insurance must be placed with carriers admitted in the state where operations occur. Compliance platforms should verify carrier admission status as part of automated certificate review.
When a submitted COI lists a carrier, cross-referencing the NAIC number against state department databases confirms admitted status. Certificates from non-admitted carriers on contracts requiring admitted coverage represent a compliance deficiency that must be resolved before work commences.
